New Year’s Day

New Year’s Day is the first day of the new year. On the modern Gregorian calendar, it is celebrated on January 1, as it was also in ancient Rome (though other dates were also used in Rome). In all countries using the Gregorian calendar as their main calendar, except for Israel, it is a public holiday,[citation needed] often celebrated with fireworks at the stroke of midnight as the new year starts. January 1 on the Julian calendar corresponds to January 14 on the Gregorian calendar, and it is on that date that followers of some of the Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate the New Year.

Pollution and High Cholesterol are Deadly Cocktail

Pollution and High Cholesterol are Deadly Cocktail

(July 26, 2007) Although diet, smoking and other factors contribute to the risk of cardiovascular disease — the leading cause of death in the Western world — scientists have long believed that air pollution, particularly tiny pieces of soot from trucks and factories, plays a major role, too.

For years, scientists around the world have reported that on days when fine-particle pollution increases, deaths from lung diseases, heart attacks and strokes rise substantially. Riverside County and the San Gabriel Valley have among the worst fine-particle pollution in the nation.

New research done by UCLA scientist suggests that people with high cholesterol are especially vulnerable to heart disease when they are exposed to diesel exhaust and other ultra-fine particles that are common pollutants in urban air.

Microscopic particles in diesel exhaust combine with cholesterol to activate genes that trigger hardening of the arteries.

“Their combination creates a dangerous synergy that wreaks cardiovascular havoc far beyond what’s caused by the diesel or cholesterol alone,” said Dr. André Nel, chief of nanomedicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a researcher at UCLA’s California NanoSystems Institute.

The scientists say their study, conducted on human cells as well as on mice, is the first to explain how particulates in the air activate genes that can cause heart attacks or strokes.

The researchers exposed human blood cells to a combination of diesel particles and oxidized fats, then extracted their DNA. Working together, the particles and fats switched on genes that cause inflammation of blood vessels, which leads to clogged arteries, or atherosclerosis.

The scientists reported that diesel particles may enter the body’s circulatory system from the lungs, and then react with fats in the arteries to alter how genes are activated, triggering inflammation that causes heart disease.

Other research has shown similar inflammatory damage in lungs exposed to fine particles. Diesel exhaust has also been linked to lung cancer, asthma attacks and DNA damage.

New Study Renews Concerns of Cancer Risk with Statin Drugs

New Study Renews Concerns of Cancer Risk with Statin Drugs

(August 8, 2007) U.S. researchers reported renewed concerns that patients who took statin drugs to lower their cholesterol had a slightly higher risk of cancer. Statin drugs can also damage the liver and muscles.

The researchers found one extra case of cancer per 1,000 patients with the lowest levels of LDL — low density lipoprotein or so-called bad cholesterol — when compared to patients with higher LDL levels.

Dr. Richard Karas of Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and colleagues did not look directly at patients for their study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

They did what is known as a meta-analysis, looking at the records of 41,173 patients in 23 different trials of statins.

“The demonstrated benefits of statins in lowering the risk of heart disease remain clear; however, certain aspects of lowering LDL with statins remain controversial and merit further research,” Karas said in a statement.

Karas and colleagues examined the records of patients treated with popular statins, including Pfizer Inc.’s Lipitor and Merck & Co. Inc.’s Zocor, now off patent.

Dr. Peter Verdegem, Chief Scientist of Unicity International stated, “It has been widely known and accepted that statin therapy to lower cholesterol has serious side effects, such as muscle problems, liver damage and rhabdomyolisis. Also, it has been suspected that high statin therapy may be related to certain forms of cancer.”

The meta-analysis strengthens the arguments for this assumption.

Statin drugs contain non-natural chemical components that disrupt biological mechanisms in our body. Since our body is a complex system such disruptions may result in imbalances causing the side effects.

“Bios Life contains a blend of nutrients that are a natural part of our diet, therefore, Bios Life does not have the side effects associated with statin drugs. In stead it brings cholesterol levels to a healthy balance by providing our body with nutrients that are lacking from our food. Our body knows how to get cholesterol at healthy levels, provided we give it what it needs with Bios Life,” observed Dr. Verdegem.

Bios Life Study Produces a Decreased Risk for Cardiovascular Disease in African Americans

Bios Life Study Produces a Decreased Risk for Cardiovascular Disease in African Americans

(August 16, 2007) As a first line defense against heart disease, 85 members of the Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Roswell, Georgia participated in a three-month health project this spring to naturally optimize their cholesterol levels using Bios Life. The project was endorsed by Dr. William Cooper, Medical Director of Cardiovascular Services of Wellstar-Kennestone Hospital.

Each of the study participants added Bios Life to their diet, twice daily, for the 12-week duration of the health project. At the end of three months, participants that were at higher risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) successfully lowered their LDL (bad cholesterol) levels by an average of 19% and triglyceride levels by an average of 41%.

Participants further reduced their risk for heart disease by increasing their HDL (good cholesterol) levels by an average of 32%. Using risk calculations obtained from the Framingham Heart Study, participants in this study effectively decreased their 10 year risk of CVD by 36%.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), African Americans living in the southern region of the U.S. are at greatest risk for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the country.

The foremost risk factors for cardiovascular disease are high LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglyceride levels. The latest insights in lipid management, however, indicate that low HDL (good cholesterol) may be even more important in predicting CVD risk. The CDC Division of Heart Disease and Stroke prevention recommends controlling cholesterol as the most effective way to decrease risk for heart disease.

Conventional intervention focuses on lipid lowering medication, such as statins. These drugs are effective in lowering LDL, but have limited success for increasing HDL. Moreover, they have been linked to side-effects, such as liver and muscle problems. For many people, these side effects are a reason to look for safe clinically proven natural alternatives.

Bios Life provides a natural, side effect-free option for individuals who are at risk for heart disease and who are unable or unwilling to use statin medications for cholesterol control. Bios Life combines viscous soluble fiber, policosanol and phytosterols to safely optimize cholesterol by minimizing cholesterol absorption in the intestinal tract, regulating cholesterol created by the liver and enhancing enzymatic breakdown of cholesterol in the body.

Heart Disease is All in the Family

Heart Disease is All in the Family

(September 11, 2007) Do you have a close family member with heart disease? Then you might be at a higher risk yourself.

In Britain, researchers came to the conclusion after reviewing previous studies on heart disease and how it runs in families. One study revealed 48 percent of all heart disease events and 72 percent of all premature deaths from heart disease occurred in 14 percent of families with a history of heart disease.

According to study authors, these findings could help in developing better preventive services to people with a family history of the condition and could markedly improve treatment and survival for heart conditions.

The authors recommend screening “first-degree” relatives of people with heart disease — mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters — but such screening rarely takes place in clinical practice. In one study conducted at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Md., among 859 siblings of 490 heart disease patients, siblings actually had a lower awareness of high blood pressure — a key risk factor for heart disease — and how to treat it than members of the general population. In another U.S. study involving more than 5,000 heart disease patients, less than 1 percent had discharge plans calling for family members to be screened, and only 20 percent had family members screened within six months of the patient’s initial hospital stay.

“First degree relatives are an obvious, but neglected, group at which primary prevention should be targeted,” conclude the study authors.

Statin Drugs vs. Bios Life

Statin Drugs vs. Bios Life

The drugs used by doctors to treat high cholesterol are called statin medications and come with a long list of well-documented side effects. In fact, it is estimated that over 25% of the population cannot take statin medications because of their potential side effects.

Today billions of dollars are being spent by pharmaceutical drug companies to market statin medications, illustrating the size of this market. Because of the magnitude of the heart disease epidemic, the statin medications market is expected to exceed $30 billion in sales this year.

How many people do you believe would prefer a natural alternative to chemical medications? What if you had exclusive marketing rights to the only safe, natural, clinically proven alternative to statin medications?

Without question Bios Life is the most effective, all-natural alternative to statin medications for helping people reach and maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Not only is it equally effective as statins at lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol, it is also three times more effective at raising HDL (good) cholesterol.

The studies on Bios Life have gained the attention of the American Heart Association who wrote a press release on Bios Life educating their members on the benefits of Bios Life. Their members—the cardiologists of the world—are facing more and more demands from their patients who do not want the potentially dangerous side effects of chemical, pharmaceutical drugs.

Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular Disease

Not only is cardiovascular disease the number one cause of death in North America, it is also the leading cause of death in the world.  According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease kills one person every 36 seconds. That’s 2,400 people each day and more than 876,000 each year.

sample_cvd

sample_cvd

sample_c_cardio

sample_c_cardio

Cardiovascular disease claims more lives each year than cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, lower respiratory diseases and accidents combined.

The leading cause of cardiovascular disease is having unhealthy levels of bad cholesterol, also known as LDL cholesterol. This cholesterol is a wax-like substance that, over time, forms a plaque on the inside of the artery. For most people there are no signs or symptoms that this plaque is building up, which is why it is a called the silent killer. Unfortunately for millions of people each year, this plaque buildup ruptures, resulting in a blocking of blood flow. If the blood flow going to the brain is blocked, it causes a stroke. If it is blocked going to the heart, it results in a heart attack.

Bios Life

Bios Life

Bios Life is a unique and patented formula of naturally derived ingredients.  When taken as a drink, Bios Life forms a fiber matrix in the digestive system. This fiber matrix envelops nutrients and sugars as they are consumed, releasing them to the body at a natural rate. This revolutionary breakthrough provides the following health benefits:

• Clinically proven to reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol
• Clinically proven to increase good (HDL) cholesterol

sample_bioslife

sample_bioslife

• Balances blood sugar levels
• Eliminates energy spikes and crashes
• Aids in weight management
• Promotes healthy digestive function
• Strengthens the immune system
• Decreases triglyceride levels
• Cleanses the colon

Thousands of healthcare and medical professionals around the world have helped millions of people improve their health with this safe and scientifically proven natural solution to many of the world’s leading health problems.

Cholesterol Management

Bios Life combines four effective approaches to lowering harmful cholesterol:

  1. Helps to block re-absorption of cholesterol in the intestinal tract
  2. Helps to block absorption of cholesterol which comes directly from food after digestion
  3. Reduces the cholesterol produced by the liver
  4. Enhances enzymatic breakdown and removal of bad cholesterol

Bios Life lowers serum cholesterol by reducing the absorption and production of dietary cholesterol.

On average, Bios Life reduces bad cholesterol (LDL) by 31% in only eight weeks and over 50% in participants with very high LDL levels. It improves good cholesterol levels (HDL) by an average 29% in the same eight weeks and up to 80% in those with very low HDL levels. Continued use showed further improvement in both LDL and HDL levels. It also reduces triglyceride levels an average of 40%. There is no known clinically proven drug or natural product in the world that offers these three combined benefits to help reduce one’s risk of cardiovascular disease. Unlike prescription drugs, Bios Life is a true cholesterol optimization product.

Diabetes Management

Bios Life is clinically proven to stabilize our blood sugar levels. This has important benefits for all of us. Our modern diets and processed foods cause rapid fluctuation of glucose and insulin levels in our blood. The peaks cause cellular damage and pancreatic stress. The lows cause sugar cravings and lack of energy.

The fiber matrix in Bios Life limits the rapid increase of sugar levels by spreading out the sugar absorption during the day and by reducing the glycemic index of our foods. The resulting balance in our sugar levels gives us more usable energy throughout the day and prevents us from giving in to our sugar craving. This is of great benefit if you want to maintain a healthy weight or want to lose weight.

The lower glucose levels in the blood are also very beneficial for diabetics. The studies with Bios Life have shown that diabetics can reduce their sugar levels after the meal using Bios Life and improve their overall disease management.

The added proprietary chromium in Bios Life further sensitizes insulin and allows a further decrease in average glucose levels.

In a recent study presented to the American Heart Association(AHA.) Annual Conference concluded Bios Life reduced the post-prandial glucose levels 28% and HbA1c levels 15%; indicating Bios Life provides a natural option to improve diabetes management.

Digestive Health Management

The Biosphere fiber in Bios Life promotes the health of the intestinal tract. This can be noticed by improved digestion, increased energy, better bowel function, and a strengthened immune system.

A clean intestinal tract also allows our bodies to get rid of toxins and better absorb important nutrients from our diets.

The protection our immune system provides to fight off all kinds of sicknesses and disease is directly related to the health of our intestinal flora. Bios Life provides nutrition for our friendly bacteria.

Bios Life Key Ingredients

  • Biosphere Fiber – A patented blend of five highly soluble fibers combined with mineral carbonate which quickly forms a fiber matrix in the digestive system that traps cholesterol and bile acids
  • Phytosterols – Soy bean oil and sunflower oil extract which causes cholesterol from the food to be passed out of the

body and not absorbed into the bloodstream

  • Policosanol – Sugar Cane extract which inhibits HMGCoA reductase—the key enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis by the liver
  • Chrysanthemum morifolium – A water extract which activates an enzyme called 7-alpha hydroxylase which takes cholesterol out of the system and converts it to bile acids
  • Chromium polynicotinate – A proprietary form of chromium with high bioavailability that enhances the effectiveness of insulin and reduces blood glucose levels
  • Beta glucans – Fiber that controls the lipid and glucose response after a meal. Also stimulates white blood cells that are a key factor in the immune system
  • Niacinamide, Riboflavin, Biotin, Cyanocobalamin, Folic Acid, and Thiamin HCI – Provide a powerful vitamin B complex to breakdown nutrients into energy. Also B-vitamins decrease the homocysteine level which is an independent risk factor for CVD.
  • Ascorbic Acid, D-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate, and Beta Carotene – Powerful antioxidants that prevent lipid and LDL oxidation and strengthen the immune system

In addition, Bios Life contains the powerful antioxidants Ascorbic Acid, D-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate, and Beta Carotene.

Timing and Trends

Timing and Trends

There has never been a greater confluence of public awareness, market need and product solution than with Our Franchise opportunity.

Timing and Trends

Timing and Trends

Over the past ten years, public awareness about heart disease has continually increased. Everyday new studies and warnings headline our news outlets. Leading pharmaceutical companies have invested billions of dollars informing the public about the dangers of high cholesterol and the benefits cholesterol drugs (statins) provide. In fact, the world’s top selling prescription drugs are statins.

Why are these pharmaceutical companies investing so much? Because cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the world. In fact, CVD claims more lives each year than cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, lower respiratory diseases and accidents combined. The American Heart Association recently reported that more than 105 million people in the United States suffer from high cholesterol; more than 36 million have dangerously high levels of cholesterol. Cardiovascular disease is an epidemic.

The statin drug industry expects sales to exceed $30 billion this year. However, statin drugs come with a long list of well-documented side effects. The good news is Bios Life offers the only natural, safe, and clinically proven product of its type to effectively address these health concerns. And as more people search for natural, safe, alternatives to prescriptions the wellness industry is expected to exceed $1 trillion by 2010.

Our Franchise offers the right product at the right time with a built in market that is aware of the problem and looking for a better solution.

Janet Bloom

Janet Bloom

Janet Bloom

Jan served as Chief Administrator and Marketing Director for a large Family Medicine Practice in Boca Raton, Florida for more than ten years.

In 1992 she founded Natural Health Concepts, Inc, a company dedicated to educating and training healthcare professionals, throughout the world, on breakthrough technologies in the field of Preventive and Complementary Medicine.

Jan is an accomplished speaker and trainer. She has been highly recognized for her successful leadership and business development as a consultant with the Make Life Better Company. Jan serves as co-chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Make Life Better Company.

Her passion has always been in the field of Health. Her husband is a family practitioner and maintained a private practice in South Florida for 20 years, in partnership with a group of 5 physicians.

It frustrated her to see a huge void in their practices that they did not realize. The void she observed was the lack of options being presented to patients to address their medical concerns. She noticed how many patients were becoming educated on their own to nutritional approaches and dietary supplements. She observed that the patients were consistently bringing in products and articles to ask the doctors about.

She also noticed the physicians not comfortable with this. They were not completely against Nutritional Therapies, they lacked education in that area. It was easier for the doc to simply write the prescription rather than find the time to get themselves up to speed on the latest breakthroughs in Integrative Medicine.

In 1994 Janet started a company, Natural Health Concepts Inc. that was dedicated and focused on the development and implementation of Preventive Health Departments within the classical medical Practice. This company grew to reach thousands globally and has impacted medical Practices all over the United States. This educational process is not limited to just Physicians.. Natural Health Concepts also recruits, trains all allied healthcare professionals. Registered Dietitians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Fitness professionals, etc.

Integrative Medicine and Preventive Health is not a fad; it is a trend. It is Janet’s belief that the practitioners that do not get “up to snuff” will sadly be left in the dark and abandoned by their patients whom are seeking providers that are open minded and are aware of all options and the latest research to address their particular condition.

Peter J.E. Verdegem, Ph.D., MBA

Dr. Peter J.E. Verdegem, Our Franchise’s Chief Science Officer, obtained a MSc in Organic Chemistry from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. In his specialization he studied the chemistry of the photosynthetic reaction center of plants. After his MSc degree, he started a Ph.D. research project studying the human eye. For this various vitamin A analogues were synthesized and incorporated into rhodopsin, the visual receptor in the retina. NMR allowed to measure internuclear distances in the receptor vitamin A ligand, and thereby a three-dimensional model for the ligand could be constructed. This has resulted in a greater understanding of the fascinating physics that happens in the visual process. In 1998 he was awarded a Ph.D. in Bio-Organic Photochemistry.

He pursued his academic career with post-doctoral research at Stockholm University in Sweden where he developed techniques to study proteins at molecular levels. During a position at Nijmegen University Medical Center in the Netherlands, he studied and developed non-invasive technology to diagnose prostate cancer. After these academic positions he joined Royal Numico Research and Development to develop, and clinically substantiate dietary supplements for a broad variety of health conditions (such as menopause, prostate health, eye health, Alzheimer, ADHD, dyslexia, diabetes, and obesity). Dr. Verdegem’s scientific work has been published in over 30 peer-reviewed publications. In 2004, he moved to Utah, and joined Our Franchise to head to Research & Development Department, where he is responsible for product development, clinical substantiation and scientific training of our Business Associates. In 2006 he finished his MBA from the Marriott School of Business at Brigham Young University.
